About this course

Divinity, in its fullest sense, is the academic study of religion, theology, scripture, and the history of religious thought, and at St Andrews the discipline is approached with both scholarly seriousness and a genuine engagement with the questions that faith raises for human life. This degree focuses primarily on Christian faith practices and the profound influence that the Jewish and Christian scriptures have had on Western civilisation, placing those traditions in dialogue with broader questions about the nature of religious belief, the challenges faith faces in the modern world, and the relationship between theology and philosophy.

The Biblical Languages strand adds a distinctive depth to the degree by giving you direct access to the texts at the heart of the Judaeo-Christian tradition. You will study the original languages, Hebrew and Greek, that the scriptures were written in, which opens up questions of translation, interpretation, and meaning that are simply inaccessible without that linguistic foundation. Alongside this, you will explore the shape of religious belief and practice in contemporary society, examining both the significance of faith today and the intellectual and cultural challenges it faces.

The degree runs over four years in full-time mode, and a year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study at another institution and to broaden your scholarly and personal horizons. The typical entry tariff is 152 points.

Divinity graduates develop a rare combination of analytical precision, deep reading, and sensitivity to questions that touch on meaning, value, and human experience. Many go on to careers in the church, chaplaincy, teaching, education policy, or community leadership. Others work in journalism, publishing, ethics consultancy, or the civil service, where the ability to engage seriously with diverse worldviews and to navigate complex moral questions is genuinely valued.

Postgraduate study in theology, religious studies, philosophy, or biblical studies is a well-established next step for those drawn to academic research or specialist ministry.

Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” good transport link…
