Drama and English Language
Drama and English language together make for a rich intellectual combination. Drama examines how performance works: how bodies, voices, space, time and text combine to create meaning in front of an audience, and how theatre has been used across cultures and centuries to explore, challenge and reflect human experience. English language, distinct from English literature, takes a more analytical approach to language itself, examining how it is structured, how it changes over time, how it varies across communities, and how it is used to build social relationships and wield power.
Together these disciplines develop strong skills in communication, analysis and creative practice.
At Liverpool Hope University you will study drama in the heart of a city with a vibrant theatrical culture, exploring the origins and development of dramatic forms while also creating and refining new work in practical contexts. Alongside this, your English language studies will take you into linguistics, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, and the study of how language operates in everyday life and in creative contexts. The three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, providing substantial professional and international experience that enriches both your academic development and your career prospects.
Graduates of drama and English language are well placed for careers in theatre and performance, arts education, broadcasting and media, journalism, publishing, communications, copywriting, speech and language therapy (with further study), corporate training and presentation, community arts, and a wide range of roles where communication and creative thinking are central. Teaching is a common path, particularly in schools at secondary level, and many graduates pursue PGCE programmes or postgraduate study in education, creative writing, linguistics, or drama and theatre studies. The combination of creative confidence and linguistic precision makes this degree genuinely versatile.
