Drama and Musical Theatre

Drama and Musical Theatre together cover the full spectrum of live performance, from the spoken dramatic text and the conventions of theatrical staging to the integrated art form of musical theatre where drama, music and dance combine. Studying them together gives you both breadth across performance traditions and depth in your own creative practice, developing the discipline and versatility that a working performer, director or theatre-maker needs. Musical theatre in particular demands exceptional multi-skilled performers, and training that integrates vocal performance, movement and dramatic characterisation is the standard preparation for the profession.

At Liverpool Hope University, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing a structured introduction to both disciplines before you engage with the full degree curriculum. Liverpool's identity as a city of music, performance and cultural creativity makes it an unusually fitting environment for this kind of training: the city's theatres, venues and festivals are part of the context within which you learn. You will explore the history and theory of drama, develop your acting technique and movement skills, study vocal performance and musical theatre repertoire, and engage with the creative and critical questions that practitioners in these forms must grapple with.

The programme includes a sandwich year and a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to gain professional experience and to encounter theatre in an international context. Work placement is also built in, supporting your transition into the industry.

Graduates of Drama and Musical Theatre programmes pursue careers in professional performance, directing, teaching, arts administration, community arts, youth theatre, and the broader creative industries. Many work across several of these areas simultaneously as portfolio careers are the norm in the performing arts. Others move into arts management, casting, theatre production, and creative education.
