Dutch and Finnish

Dutch and Finnish represent an unusual and rewarding pairing, bringing together two languages that are quite different in origin and character but each rich with literary and cultural significance. Dutch, a West Germanic language closely related to English and German, is spoken by around 24 million people in the Netherlands and Belgium and has a literary tradition of considerable depth, as well as being the working language of major international institutions. Finnish, a Finno-Ugric language unrelated to the Indo-European family, offers a genuinely distinctive linguistic challenge and cultural window, with a rich oral and literary heritage including the Kalevala national epic and a highly developed modern literary culture.

At University College London, this four-year joint honours programme divides equally between your two languages. You will study speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translation in both Dutch and Finnish, developing genuine communicative competence alongside deep cultural and critical understanding. Your modules will range across literature, history, film, linguistics, and politics in both language communities, with a wide variety of options available to tailor the degree to your particular interests.

In the third year you will spend time abroad split between two countries where your languages are spoken, giving you the extended immersion that is essential to reaching a high level of fluency and cultural familiarity in each language.

Graduates with expertise in Dutch and Finnish alongside strong analytical and communication skills are well placed for careers in translation and interpreting, international organisations, diplomacy, journalism, publishing, business roles with a Benelux or Nordic dimension, cultural organisations, and academic research. The combination of languages is genuinely distinctive and valuable in a competitive graduate market. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in linguistics, translation, Nordic studies, European studies, or international relations.
