Dutch and Serbian/Croatian

Dutch and Serbian/Croatian is an unusual and intellectually rich combination, spanning two very different branches of European language and culture. Dutch is a West Germanic language spoken in the Netherlands and Belgium, closely related to German and English, and the language of a society with a remarkable history of trade, art, philosophy, and tolerance, as well as one of Europe's most internationally connected contemporary economies. Serbian and Croatian are South Slavic languages, sharing a close grammatical relationship but representing distinct literary and cultural identities, and spoken across the western Balkans in countries whose twentieth-century history has been among the most complex and significant in Europe.

At University College London, this four-year full-time programme develops rigorous linguistic and cultural competence in both language traditions. UCL's School of Slavonic and East European Studies brings expert knowledge of Serbian and Croatian within the broader context of South Slavic and Balkan studies, while Dutch studies at UCL covers the language and culture of the Netherlands and Belgium in depth. You will develop genuine proficiency in Dutch alongside reading and communicative competence in Serbian and Croatian, engaging with the literary, historical, and cultural traditions of all three national contexts.

The four-year structure allows for the depth of study that learning two distinct languages simultaneously requires.

Graduates from this combination go on to careers in translation and interpreting, diplomacy, international business, journalism, cultural institutions, NGOs working in the Balkans or the Low Countries, academic research, and any professional role requiring engagement with Dutch-speaking nations or with Serbia and Croatia.
