Dutch and Ukrainian

Dutch and Ukrainian is an unusual and significant combination, bringing together the language of the Netherlands and Flanders with the language of one of Eastern Europe's largest nations. Dutch is spoken by around 25 million people and is the language of two countries with major roles in European politics, trade, and culture. Ukrainian has taken on a new global significance in recent years, and its study at university level provides access to a rich literary tradition, a complex history, and a country whose future remains one of the defining questions of European politics.

Together, these languages open access to two very different but equally important parts of the continent.

This four-year full-time programme at University College London is taught within one of the UK's leading modern languages departments, with serious academic engagement with both the linguistic and cultural dimensions of each language. You will develop proficiency in Dutch and Ukrainian to a high level, reading literature and cultural texts in the original, studying the history and contemporary society of the Netherlands, Belgium, and Ukraine, and engaging with the linguistic structures of both languages. UCL's location in London provides access to Dutch and Ukrainian cultural communities and to the international networks that make language study most valuable.

Graduates from this programme pursue careers in international organisations, diplomacy, translation and interpretation, journalism, business, and academia. The Ukrainian element is particularly distinctive and gives graduates access to opportunities in government, NGOs, and media organisations with a focus on Eastern Europe. The Dutch element connects graduates to one of Europe's most economically significant countries and language communities.

Postgraduate options include linguistics, translation studies, European studies, and international relations, and the research skills developed at UCL provide a strong foundation for doctoral study in any of these fields.
