Early Childhood Development and Learning

Early childhood development and learning sits at the intersection of developmental psychology, education, and social policy, asking how children grow, think, form attachments, and acquire language in the crucial years from birth to around eight. These early years have a profound and lasting impact on later life outcomes, and the adults who work with young children, whether in nurseries, schools, family support services, or policymaking, benefit enormously from a deep evidence-based understanding of what children need and how practitioners can best support them.

This programme at Coventry University is studied part-time, making it accessible to those already working with children or managing other commitments. You will explore child development theory, early years pedagogy, play and learning, inclusive practice, and the policy frameworks that shape early childhood provision in the UK. The course includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement, offering rich practical and international dimensions to your studies.

Building on the genuine insight that involvement in the educational and personal growth of children can offer a highly fulfilling profession, the programme is designed to help you gain recognition as an early childhood development graduate practitioner, subject to meeting placement and assessment criteria. You will develop your capacity for critical reflection, applying theory to real practice settings and developing the professional judgement that characterises skilled early years work.

Graduates of early childhood development and learning programmes pursue careers as early years educators, practitioners in children's centres, family support workers, play specialists, and professionals in local authority children's services. The analytical and reflective skills the degree develops are also valued in policy, inspection, research, and third-sector organisations working with children and families. Many graduates go on to further study in education, social work, or child psychology.
