Early Childhood Studies

Early childhood studies is an academically rigorous discipline that draws on developmental psychology, sociology, education, health, and public policy to examine the experiences and needs of children from birth to eight years of age. It asks how children develop physically, cognitively, linguistically, and socially, what conditions support their wellbeing, and how families, practitioners, and policymakers can act effectively to promote good outcomes in the earliest years of life. The early years are now understood to be critical for long-term health, educational achievement, and social development, and the field has grown in both scientific depth and policy significance as a result.

The four-year full-time Early Childhood Studies programme at Anglia Ruskin University provides a thorough academic foundation in these areas. You will study child development theory, play and learning, safeguarding and child protection, family support, inclusive practice, and the policy and legal frameworks governing services for young children. The programme is designed to develop your critical and analytical thinking alongside your practical understanding of what high-quality early years provision looks like.

With a typical entry tariff of 120 points, the programme is open to students from a range of backgrounds and is particularly valuable for those already drawn to working with young children or in family support roles.

Graduates pursue careers in early years education and childcare, family support and intervention services, health visiting, social work with families, children's centre management, policy development, and research into child development and early education. Many also go on to further professional qualifications in teaching, social work, or health, or to postgraduate study in early childhood or education.
