Early Childhood Studies
Early childhood studies is a discipline that examines the lives, development, and wellbeing of children from birth to around eight years of age, drawing on developmental psychology, sociology, education, and public policy to build a rounded understanding of early childhood as a critical period in human development. It asks fundamental questions about the nature of childhood itself: what young children need, how they learn and develop, how our understanding of early childhood has changed over time, and how it varies across cultures and societies.
At Edge Hill University you will explore the perceptions and realities of young children's lives over three years, examining child development, play, learning, safeguarding, family and community contexts, policy, and the rights and citizenship of children. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you substantial professional experience in early childhood settings and international exposure alongside your academic development. You will develop skills in observation, critical reflection, and evidence-based thinking about practice, alongside the ethical awareness and commitment to children's wellbeing that the field requires.
Early childhood studies graduates are well prepared for careers in early years and nursery settings, Sure Start and family support programmes, children's social care, school support and teaching assistant roles, play therapy and play work, community development with families, and the wide range of public and voluntary sector organisations working with young children and families. Teaching in early years settings at a higher level, including EYFS leadership, is accessible with further professional training. Postgraduate study in education, social work, early childhood, or child psychology is a natural extension for those seeking to develop specialist expertise or enter regulated professional roles.
The programme is also excellent preparation for those who wish to become primary school teachers through PGCE training.
