Early Childhood Studies

Early Childhood Studies is a discipline that takes seriously the significance of the first years of life for long-term human development. It draws on developmental psychology, education, sociology, health and social policy to examine how young children think, learn and grow, and what conditions best support their flourishing. The field is shaped by the understanding that early childhood is not simply preparation for later life but a period of profound intrinsic value, and that the professionals who work with young children carry substantial responsibility for the wellbeing and development of some of the most vulnerable members of society.

At Stranmillis University College this three-year full-time programme is structured around three core themes: Understanding the Child, The Child in the Learning Context, and The Child in the Family and Community. Together these themes provide a comprehensive and multi-professional perspective on early childhood education and care, reflecting both the latest developments in the field and the specific policy and practice context of Northern Ireland. The programme was designed by professionals across the sector to meet the genuine training needs of current and future early years practitioners.

A sandwich year is included in the structure, giving you substantial placement experience, as well as further work placement opportunities embedded in the curriculum.

Graduates from Early Childhood Studies degrees go on to careers in the early years sector in a range of roles, including nursery management, playgroup leadership, childminding, family support work, children's centre coordination and early intervention programmes. Many pursue further qualifications in teaching, social work, health visiting or educational psychology. The broad understanding of child development, family dynamics and educational practice the degree provides is valued across health, education and social care settings.

For those wishing to continue academically, the degree provides a good platform for postgraduate study in early childhood, education, social work or developmental psychology.
