East Asian Studies

East Asian Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies approaches China, Japan, Korea and the wider East Asian region as an integrated area of study, examining the historical, cultural, political and economic forces that have shaped it and that continue to make it one of the most dynamic regions in the world. East Asia is home to three of the world's largest economies, several of its fastest-growing militaries and some of its most influential cultural traditions. Understanding the region in its complexity, rather than through the lens of any single country, is an increasingly valuable capability.

SOAS is distinctive as a place to study East Asia. The school's specialism in the non-Western world and its commitment to studying cultures on their own terms, rather than as reflections of a Western norm, gives its programmes a critical depth and intellectual independence that is recognised internationally. The East Asian Studies degree at SOAS emphasises breadth across the region and across disciplines, combining political, historical, cultural and social analysis.

The programme includes a foundation year option for students who need additional preparation before beginning the full degree. You will study the history, politics, societies and cultures of East Asia through a range of disciplines, developing the comparative and analytical skills to engage with the region thoughtfully.

Graduates of East Asian Studies programmes work in international business, the diplomatic service, journalism, the civil service, NGOs, international organisations, education, cultural institutions and research. East Asian language skills are a significant asset in the labour market, and SOAS graduates are sought after by employers with interests in the region. Postgraduate study in area studies, international relations, development studies or a language is a natural continuation.
