Ecology and Conservation Biology

Ecology is the scientific study of how living organisms interact with each other and with their environments, from the dynamics of a single pond to the functioning of entire biomes. Conservation biology applies ecological knowledge to the pressing challenge of protecting biodiversity in a world where human activity is altering habitats, changing climates and driving species towards extinction at rates unprecedented in human history. Together, these fields occupy some of the most important scientific and policy territory of our time, asking not just how nature works but what we can do to sustain it.

This three-year full-time programme at the University of Leeds places you in the middle of that inquiry. You will study ecological processes at multiple scales, examining populations, communities, ecosystems and landscapes, and explore the biological principles that underpin conservation practice. Field and laboratory skills are central to ecology, and you will develop practical abilities in species identification, environmental survey, data collection and analysis.

A sandwich year gives you the opportunity to gain substantial professional experience before your final year, and the option to study abroad adds an international dimension to your understanding of biodiversity and conservation. Work placement opportunities throughout the programme connect academic learning with real professional environments.

As populations grow and human activities intensify, the need for well-trained ecologists and conservation biologists has never been greater. You will develop the scientific understanding, fieldwork skills and quantitative abilities to contribute meaningfully to this challenge.

Graduates work in ecological consultancy, nature conservation, environmental management, national parks and protected areas, wildlife charities, government environmental agencies, education and scientific research. Many pursue postgraduate study in ecology, conservation, environmental science or related fields, some going on to research careers or advanced professional roles in conservation policy and practice.
