Ecology

Ecology is the scientific study of the relationships between living organisms and their environments, from the smallest microbial communities to whole biomes. It asks how populations grow and decline, how species interact through competition, predation, and mutualism, how energy and nutrients flow through ecosystems, and how these complex systems respond to disturbance, both natural and human-made. In an era of accelerating environmental change, the questions ecology addresses have never been more urgent.

At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year full-time programme is taught by researchers actively working at the frontiers of ecological science and its application to environmental management and nature conservation. You will gain a rigorous grounding in ecological principles and develop practical field skills through a programme that takes learning beyond the lecture theatre. Field trips and expeditions give you hands-on experience with ecological survey methods in Scottish landscapes and further afield, and the programme includes a year abroad that provides the opportunity to study or conduct fieldwork in an international context.

You will undertake your own research project, developing the independent scientific thinking that is essential for a career in ecology or conservation. The typical entry tariff is 216 UCAS points.

Graduates of ecology degrees are well prepared for careers in nature conservation, environmental management, ecological consultancy, government agencies, research institutions, and international environmental organisations. The combination of field competence and scientific rigour is valued by employers in the public and private sectors at a time when demand for environmental expertise is growing rapidly. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate research, contributing to the scientific understanding of ecosystems and biodiversity at a moment when that knowledge matters enormously.

Science communication, policy work, and roles in national parks and wildlife trusts are among the other paths that ecology graduates regularly take.
