About this course

Economics and Accounting are disciplines that together give you the tools to understand organisations and economies from the inside and the outside simultaneously. Economics asks how markets and economies function, how decisions are made by individuals and institutions, and what happens when those decisions interact across complex systems. Accounting provides the financial language through which organisations report on their activities, measure their performance, and plan for the future.

Studied together, they offer an unusually complete picture of how commercial and public organisations work.

At the University of Leicester, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside your academic studies. You will develop core economic theory, microeconomics and macroeconomics, alongside the technical content of accounting including financial reporting, management accounting, auditing, and taxation. Research and quantitative methods are part of the curriculum, giving you the ability to analyse economic and financial data rigorously.

Leicester's framing of the degree emphasises that the two subjects studied side by side give you skills to understand companies from both inside and outside, which is precisely the profile that employers in financial analysis, management consulting, and commercial finance are looking for.

The placement year and work placement add practical weight to the academic preparation, and the year abroad broadens your experience of different business and economic environments.

Graduates move into careers in financial analysis, investment management, accounting practice (often continuing to professional qualification with ACA, ACCA, or CIMA), management consulting, economic research, banking, and public sector finance. The combination of economic insight and accounting technical skill is a strong foundation for any career involving financial decision-making. Postgraduate study in finance, economics, or accounting is also a common pathway.

I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” the city is a brillia…

Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if y…
