Economics and Finance

Economics and finance is a combination that connects the analytical frameworks used to understand how economies work with the specific principles and methods applied to financial markets, institutions and decision-making. Economics provides the conceptual tools, from microeconomic models of behaviour to macroeconomic analysis of growth, inflation and trade, that explain how resources are allocated and how economic outcomes arise. Finance applies and extends those tools to the valuation of assets, the management of risk, the operation of financial markets and the financing decisions of businesses and governments.

At the University of Southampton you will study economics and finance over three years of full-time study, combining economic and financial theory with quantitative methods and applied analysis. A sandwich year is built into the programme, providing substantial professional experience in an economics or finance role before you return to complete your final year with enhanced practical knowledge. Work placement is also integrated throughout the programme.

You will learn how economic decisions affect individuals and society as a whole alongside the analysis of financial markets and institutions, developing the skills and knowledge needed for careers in both fields.
