About this course

Economics with data science is a degree that reflects a fundamental shift in how economic analysis is conducted. The increasing availability of large datasets, combined with the development of powerful computational methods for analysing them, has transformed what economists can learn about markets, behaviour, and policy. Data science brings the tools of machine learning, statistical computing, and large-scale data analysis to bear on economic questions, enabling research and analysis that would have been impossible with the methods available even a decade ago.

At Goldsmiths' College, this three-year programme combines a solid grounding in economic theory and quantitative methods with specific training in the data science skills that modern economic analysis increasingly requires. In the economics strand, you will study micro and macroeconomics, developing the theoretical frameworks for understanding how markets function and how economic actors make decisions, alongside the statistical and econometric methods used to test and apply those frameworks empirically. In the data science strand, you will develop programming skills, learn to work with large datasets, and engage with machine learning and statistical modelling techniques that extend what econometric analysis alone can do.

The programme develops graduates who can use data to ask and answer economic questions rigorously.

Graduates are well placed for roles that require both economic understanding and quantitative data skills. Economic analysis roles in government, the Bank of England, financial regulators, and international organisations draw graduates who can work with data to inform policy. In the private sector, roles in economic consulting, financial data analysis, and market research value this combination.

The growing field of data science itself is open to economists with strong quantitative and programming skills, particularly in applications that involve consumer behaviour, pricing, or market dynamics. Some graduates continue to postgraduate study in economics, data science, or econometrics, deepening their technical capabilities and positioning themselves for research or senior analytical roles.
