Economics with Foundation Year

Economics is the study of how individuals, organisations, and governments make decisions about the allocation of scarce resources, and how those decisions interact to produce the outcomes we observe in markets, societies, and the global economy. It combines rigorous quantitative methods with theoretical frameworks and empirical analysis to address questions about growth, employment, inequality, trade, and the behaviour of firms and consumers. As a discipline, economics sits at the heart of public policy debate and commercial decision-making.

At the University of Surrey, this four-year full-time programme includes an integrated foundation year, providing a solid grounding in the mathematical, statistical, and conceptual foundations needed for degree-level economics. The university is preparing students for the future by integrating digital skills and an awareness of the role of technology, including AI, into the curriculum, building the capabilities that employers value in a changing workplace. You will study microeconomics and macroeconomics, econometrics, and a range of applied fields, developing both your theoretical understanding and your ability to work with economic data.

Economics graduates are among the most employable in the social sciences. They work in banking, finance, consultancy, government, public policy, the civil service, international organisations, research, and a wide range of commercial roles where the ability to think analytically about markets, incentives, and data is valued.
