Economics with Spanish

Economics with Spanish combines two disciplines that are individually rigorous and that together open an unusually broad range of opportunities in a globally interconnected world. Economics provides the analytical tools for understanding how markets, firms, households and governments make decisions, how resources are allocated, how prices are determined and how economic policy affects the welfare of individuals and societies. Spanish, one of the world's most widely spoken languages, carries access to the cultures, literatures and economic life of Spain and Latin America, and fluency in it is a significant professional asset across business, law, government and international organisations.

At the University of St Andrews you will pursue a structured, cumulative and rigorous programme in economics, developing competence in quantitative and model-based methods of analysis alongside conceptual understanding of microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics and applied fields such as development economics or financial economics. Your Spanish studies will develop both language proficiency and cultural knowledge. The programme includes a year abroad, which is the mechanism through which you will spend time studying or living in a Spanish-speaking country, deepening both your language and your understanding of the economic and cultural contexts of the Spanish-speaking world.

The full course runs over four years full time, reflecting the Scottish honours degree structure.

You will develop strong analytical and quantitative skills alongside the intercultural competence and language ability that come from sustained engagement with a major world language. These are a powerful combination in the graduate market.

Graduates from economics with Spanish programmes pursue careers in international business, finance, economic consultancy, government and the civil service, international development, research and academia, and a wide range of roles in the private and public sectors where both analytical rigour and language skills are valued. Postgraduate study in economics, finance, international relations or languages is also a well-established pathway.
