Economics and Ancient Greek is a combination that might initially seem unlikely but that reflects a deep intellectual compatibility. Economics asks how societies organise the production and distribution of resources, using mathematical models and empirical evidence to analyse behaviour at the level of individuals, firms, and entire economies. Ancient Greek places you at the origin point of many of the ideas that underpin modern economic and political thought, since it was the ancient Greeks who first theorised about markets, justice, the common good, and the organisation of political communities.

At the University of Glasgow, you will study economics with rigour and breadth, engaging with microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and the major debates in economic theory. Alongside this, you will read Homer and other Greek poets, Athenian tragedies and comedies, historians, orators, and philosophers such as Plato, learning about Greek political and social history, philosophy, religion, and art. You will develop both quantitative analytical skills in economics and the linguistic and interpretive skills that classical Greek demands.

The programme includes a year abroad and runs over four years full-time.

Graduates of economics and Greek programmes are unusually well prepared for careers that combine analytical rigour with broad cultural and historical understanding. Many go into finance, banking, the civil service, economic consultancy, public policy, and international organisations. Others pursue academic careers in economics, classics, or intellectual history.
