Education and English Language
Education and English Language is a combination that reflects two deeply intertwined interests: understanding how and why people learn, and how language, particularly the English language, operates as the medium through which so much of that learning happens. Education Studies explores the personal, social, cultural, and political forces that shape learning and schooling, examining educational systems both in the UK and internationally. English Language brings a linguistic and analytical lens to the study of how language functions in different contexts, including educational settings.
At Liverpool Hope University, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement, making it one of the most experience-rich programmes of its kind. The foundation year provides a supported entry into the degree, and as you progress you will engage with educational theory, child development, curriculum, and policy alongside linguistic analysis, discourse, and the role of language in learning and communication. The placement year and work placement give you direct professional experience in educational or language-related settings, and the year abroad broadens your understanding of how education and language interact in different cultural contexts.
The combination is particularly relevant for students interested in teaching English as a foreign or additional language, in educational policy and practice, or in roles that require both educational understanding and linguistic competence.
Graduates move into teaching (following professional teacher training), English language teaching both in the UK and internationally, educational administration, literacy support and development work, publishing, communications, and the charitable sector. Some pursue postgraduate study in education, applied linguistics, TESOL, or related areas. The year abroad and language focus make this degree a particularly strong foundation for internationally-oriented careers in education and communications.
