About this course

Education and sport and physical education is a combination that reflects the close relationship between schooling, health, and the development of young people. Education studies examines the personal, social, cultural, and political forces that shape how learning happens, in schools, in communities, and across different national contexts. Sport and physical education brings this lens to bear on the role of physical activity, sport, and health in child and adolescent development, and on how physical education is taught and experienced in schools.

Together they prepare you to understand and work within the educational settings where physical and cognitive development intersect.

At Liverpool Hope University, this four-year full-time programme begins with a foundation year, making it accessible to students who need additional preparation before degree-level study. It also includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you an exceptionally full set of professional and international experiences before you graduate. The education strand will develop your understanding of pedagogy, policy, and the factors that promote or hinder learning, while the sport and physical education component builds both theoretical knowledge and practical teaching skills.

Liverpool Hope has a strong commitment to values-led education and to the development of the whole person, and that ethos runs through the programme.

The year abroad gives you an international perspective on how different countries approach both education and physical education, enriching your professional understanding considerably.

Graduates are well placed for careers in teaching physical education in secondary schools, coaching, sports development, community sport and health programmes, and educational leadership. Many also go on to teacher training programmes or postgraduate study in education or sport science.

Would do it again
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” local cost of living is …

Mixed but mostly good
Overall a solid programme but worth going in with open eyes. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city…
