Education as a field of study examines one of the most fundamental human institutions from multiple angles, asking what learning is, what schools and other educational settings are for, and how different societies organise and distribute access to knowledge and opportunity. You will examine the history and philosophy of education, the sociology of educational inequality and social mobility, theories of learning and development, early childhood education, and current debates in policy and practice. Graduates pursue a wide range of careers connected to education. Many go on to gain qualified teacher status through postgraduate routes, working in primary or secondary schools. Others work in early years and childcare settings, further education, adult learning, educational charity and NGO work, youth services, community education, school leadership support roles, or policy and research positions within local authorities and government departments.

The degree also provides an excellent foundation for postgraduate study in education, social work, educational psychology, public policy or related fields.
