Education as an academic discipline is far more than preparation for teaching: it is the systematic study of how human beings learn, how educational institutions are organised, how policies shape what happens in classrooms, and what values and purposes schools, universities and other learning environments serve. It draws on philosophy, sociology, psychology, history and policy studies to examine education as a social and political phenomenon as much as a pedagogical one. At Keele University this three-year full-time BA equips you with a proactive and dynamic approach to navigating the ever-evolving education sector. You will explore contemporary challenges in education, developing your skills in critical thinking, communication and problem-solving alongside your knowledge of how education works and how it could work better. The programme is designed to open multiple career pathways, whether you want to teach, work in community education, pursue educational research or contribute to policy.
The course includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you substantial professional and international experience during your studies.
Graduates from Education degrees go on to a wide range of careers. Many pursue teacher training through a PGCE or School Direct programme, qualifying to teach in primary or secondary schools. Others work in youth work, community education, educational administration, school leadership, educational publishing, policy and inspection.
The degree also provides good preparation for careers in occupational training and development, child psychology preparation, international development and higher education. For those wishing to continue academically, the degree provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in education, educational research, educational leadership or educational psychology.
