Educational Psychology

Educational psychology is the application of psychological knowledge to the understanding of how children learn, develop, and sometimes struggle within educational systems. It draws on developmental psychology, cognitive science, social psychology, and educational theory to examine the factors that affect children's learning, including individual differences, social and cultural context, classroom dynamics, and the design of learning environments. At Manchester Metropolitan University, you will study educational psychology over three years full-time, developing a grounding in the psychological theories and empirical research that underpin understanding of how children learn and develop. You will examine cognitive, social, and emotional development, the psychology of learning and motivation, special educational needs, educational assessment, and the ways in which schools and educational systems can better support all children, particularly those who face barriers to learning. You will also develop skills in psychological research methods and in interpreting and applying evidence from the field.

This degree provides a strong foundation for those who want to pursue a career as a chartered educational psychologist, a goal that requires further postgraduate training at doctoral level.
