About this course

Electrical and electronic engineering is one of the broadest and most consequential engineering disciplines, underpinning the technology that defines modern life. From microelectronic chip design and power generation to telecommunications, smart systems, and the Internet of Things, the field spans from the microscopic to the grid scale, and its advances improve virtually every aspect of twenty-first century existence. Sustainable energy systems, electric vehicles, medical devices, communications networks, and autonomous technology are all shaped by the work of electrical and electronic engineers.

At Queen's University Belfast, this three-year programme covers a wide spectrum of topics, from micro-electronic chip design and manufacturing through to power generation and distribution. You will develop a rigorous grounding in the core principles of electrical circuits, electronics, signal processing, electromagnetics, and control systems, alongside hands-on practical and laboratory work that develops your ability to design, build, and evaluate real engineering systems. The breadth of the curriculum reflects the breadth of the field itself, and you will develop both analytical depth and practical engineering competence across multiple specialisms.

Electrical and electronic engineering graduates are in demand across a very wide range of industries. Energy generation and distribution, semiconductor design, telecommunications, aerospace and defence, automotive engineering, medical technology, consumer electronics, and industrial automation all employ large numbers of electrical and electronic engineers. The analytical and problem-solving skills the degree develops are also valued in roles such as technical consultancy, project management in engineering, and research and development.

Many graduates go on to postgraduate study or pursue Chartered Engineer status through professional engineering institutions.
