About this course

Electrical and electronic engineering is one of the foundational engineering disciplines, concerned with the generation, transmission, and use of electrical energy, and with the design and analysis of electronic circuits, systems, and devices. It encompasses power engineering, control systems, signal processing, communications, embedded computing, and semiconductor electronics, and its practitioners work across industries ranging from energy and transport to telecommunications, consumer electronics, medical devices, and defence. The field is central to virtually all modern technology, and engineers with these skills are in consistent demand.

At the University of Surrey this three-year BEng programme develops the knowledge and skills required to work at the forefront of electrical engineering, power, and control. You will study circuit theory, electromagnetic theory, signal processing, digital electronics, control engineering, and the mathematics that underpins them, developing both analytical depth and the practical skills of laboratory work, simulation, and design. Surrey has strong links to the defence, aerospace, and satellite communications industries, and the programme reflects the depth of technical expertise that those and other high-technology sectors require.

Electrical and electronic engineering graduates work across power generation and distribution, automotive electronics, aerospace and defence, consumer electronics, semiconductor design, telecommunications, and industrial control systems. The discipline's breadth makes graduates versatile, and many move into roles in research and development, systems engineering, technical consultancy, and project management. Professional registration with the Engineering Council, working towards incorporated or chartered engineer status through the IET or other relevant professional bodies, is a common goal.

Some graduates continue to postgraduate study or doctoral research in areas such as power electronics, communications, or embedded systems.
