About this course

Electrical and electronic engineering is a discipline that sits at the heart of modern technology, concerned with the generation, control and use of electrical energy and the design of electronic circuits and systems. From the power infrastructure that supports cities and industry to the microprocessors inside every computing device, from medical equipment to communications networks, the discipline shapes the world in ways that are often invisible but utterly fundamental. It combines deep mathematical and physical understanding with practical design and problem-solving skills.

At the University of Brighton, this four-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year and work placement, giving you significant professional experience in an engineering environment as part of your studies. You will study circuit theory, signal processing, electronics, electromagnetic theory, power systems, control engineering, embedded systems and the mathematics that underpins them all, progressing from foundational principles to more advanced and specialist topics as you move through the degree. The sandwich placement allows you to apply this knowledge in a real engineering organisation, developing professional competence alongside academic understanding.

Electrical and electronic engineers are consistently among the most in-demand engineering graduates. Power generation and distribution, telecommunications, consumer electronics, automotive and aerospace technology, defence, semiconductor manufacturing, medical devices and computing all require engineers with this background.
