About this course

Electrical and electronic engineering is a discipline that lies at the heart of the technological transformation of modern life. Electrical engineering concerns the generation, distribution, and use of electricity at scale, from power grids and renewable energy systems to the electrical systems in vehicles and urban infrastructure. Electronic engineering focuses on the smaller-scale components, circuits, and software that comprise electronic systems, from microchips and sensors to communication devices and embedded control systems.

Together they form one of the broadest and most impactful engineering disciplines.

At the University of Salford, this three-year programme combines both disciplines to provide a comprehensive skill set that prepares you for a career in a sector reshaping the world. You will study the principles of electrical engineering and electronics, developing both theoretical understanding and practical skills across areas such as circuit design, signal processing, power systems, communications, and embedded software. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and embedded work placement opportunities, giving you direct professional experience inside the industry and allowing you to apply your academic learning in real engineering contexts.

Electrical and electronic engineering graduates are in sustained demand across a very wide range of industries. Power generation and distribution, semiconductor design, telecommunications, automotive engineering, aerospace, consumer electronics, industrial automation, and medical devices all employ large numbers of engineers with this skill set. The analytical and problem-solving capabilities the degree develops are also applicable in technical consultancy, research and development, and the fast-growing clean energy sector.

Many graduates pursue Chartered Engineer status through professional institutions, while others go on to postgraduate study in specialist areas such as power electronics, embedded systems, or communications engineering.
