About this course

Electrical and electronic engineering sits at the foundation of the modern built and digital environment. Every system that generates, transmits or controls electrical power, and every device that processes, communicates or stores information, depends on engineering knowledge that spans circuits, electromagnetics, signal processing, control systems and the software that ties hardware together. As the energy transition, the growth of artificial intelligence and the expansion of connected systems reshape industry and infrastructure, the demand for electrical and electronic engineers continues to grow.

At the University of Plymouth, this four-year full-time programme begins with a foundation year, providing an accessible entry route that builds your mathematical, scientific and computational foundations before you progress into the main degree. You will study programming in Python and learn to apply computational methods to real engineering problems, supported by guest lectures from academics and industry practitioners. As you advance through the programme, you will develop expertise in circuits and systems, power electronics, digital and analogue signal processing, control engineering, telecommunications and the use of high-performance computing and artificial intelligence in engineering applications.

The degree equips you to think analytically and to design systems that work reliably in demanding real-world contexts.

Graduates from electrical and electronic engineering programmes enter a broad and well-remunerated job market. Roles include design engineer, systems engineer, power engineer, telecommunications engineer, embedded systems developer, control systems specialist and research engineer.
