About this course

Electrical and electronic engineering is the discipline that underpins modern technology at the most fundamental level. Electrical engineering addresses the generation, distribution and control of electrical power, while electronic engineering deals with the design and application of circuits, sensors, communication systems and the embedded electronics that sit inside virtually every device in the modern world. Together they describe the engineering knowledge needed to develop the infrastructure, systems and devices on which contemporary life depends, from power networks and telecommunications to consumer electronics, medical instrumentation and autonomous vehicles.

At Edge Hill University this programme includes a STEM foundation year, which means the full course runs over four years full time. The foundation year is designed for students who want to develop the scientific and mathematical knowledge and skills needed for degree-level engineering study before progressing to the main programme. It provides a structured bridge into the discipline, covering the core scientific and technical concepts that underpin electrical and electronic engineering at degree level.

Once into the main programme you will develop competence across the full range of electrical and electronic engineering topics, including circuit theory, signal processing, electromagnetics, control systems and digital electronics.

You will develop the ability to design, analyse and test electrical and electronic systems, to apply mathematical modelling to engineering problems, and to work systematically through complex technical challenges. Engineering education at this level requires both quantitative rigour and creative problem-solving, and the programme develops both.

Graduates from electrical and electronic engineering programmes move into careers in power engineering, telecommunications, electronics design, control systems, aerospace, automotive engineering, consumer electronics, defence and the public sector. Postgraduate study is also an option for those who want to specialise further or move into research and development.
