About this course

Electrical and electronic engineering with renewable energy is a degree that addresses one of the most pressing technological challenges of our time: transitioning to a sustainable energy system while maintaining and developing the electrical infrastructure on which modern societies depend. Electrical engineering deals with the generation, transmission, and distribution of electrical power. Electronic engineering works at the level of circuits, semiconductors, and signals that enable communication, computation, and control.

The renewable energy specialism extends both into the design and operation of solar, wind, wave, and other clean energy systems, including the power electronics and grid integration technologies that make them viable at scale.

At Aberdeen, this five-year degree provides a thorough grounding in electrical and electronic engineering, covering advanced computer systems, digital circuits, photonics, automated vehicles, robotics, and medical equipment alongside the specific topics related to renewable energy generation and management. You will develop the mathematical and engineering science foundations of the discipline, the practical laboratory skills to work with electronic systems, and the analytical tools to design and optimise complex energy systems. The degree includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at an international partner institution and to engage with energy technology and policy in a different national context, which is particularly relevant in a field where the energy transition is taking different forms in different parts of the world.

Graduates of electrical and electronic engineering with renewable energy are in growing demand as the transition to clean energy accelerates. Energy companies, engineering consultancies, grid operators, offshore wind developers, power electronics manufacturers, and technology companies working on electrification and smart systems all recruit graduates with this profile. The broader electrical and electronic engineering skills also transfer into telecommunications, defence, medical technology, and automotive sectors.

Many graduates pursue further study through specialist master's degrees in power systems, renewable energy engineering, or related fields, or work towards chartered engineer status with professional bodies.

Genuinely worthwhile
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” the city is a brilli…

Exceeded expectations
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” the city is a br…
