About this course

Electrical energy systems addresses one of the defining challenges of the twenty-first century: how to generate, transmit, store and use electrical energy in ways that are efficient, reliable and compatible with decarbonisation. Electrical energy underpins manufacturing, transport, heating, lighting and virtually every dimension of modern technological life, and the transition from fossil fuels to renewable electricity is one of the central engineering tasks of our era. The discipline brings together power electronics, electrical machines, power systems, control engineering and energy policy to address that challenge from multiple angles.

At the University of Strathclyde you will study electrical energy systems over five years of full-time study, on a Master of Engineering programme that provides the depth of knowledge and technical capability needed to work at the forefront of this rapidly evolving field. A year abroad is built into the programme, broadening your engineering perspective through study at an international partner institution and giving you experience of how energy systems are approached in different national and grid contexts. You will study the fundamentals of electrical machines and power electronics, progress to power system analysis, grid integration of renewables, energy storage and smart grids, and develop the modelling and analytical skills that large-scale energy system design requires.

The typical tariff of 200 reflects the substantial mathematical and scientific preparation needed for a five-year MEng programme at one of the UK's strongest engineering universities.

Graduates work in energy utilities, electricity network operators, renewable energy developers, engineering consultancies, equipment manufacturers, offshore energy, grid operators and regulatory bodies. The global energy transition means that demand for graduates with deep expertise in electrical energy systems is exceptionally strong and is expected to remain so for decades. The MEng qualification provides a strong platform for professional registration as a chartered engineer with the IET, and many graduates also pursue doctoral research in specialist areas of power systems or energy engineering.
