About this course

Electrical power engineering is the branch of electrical engineering concerned with the generation, transmission, distribution and use of electrical power, and with the design and management of the systems that deliver energy to homes, businesses, transport networks and industry. As the world transitions to lower-carbon energy sources, the skills of power engineers have become more important than ever, with the integration of renewable generation, the development of smart grids, the electrification of transport and the expansion of energy storage all creating significant demand for engineering expertise in this field.

At Glasgow Caledonian University this four-year programme develops a thorough grounding in the principles of electrical engineering alongside specialised knowledge of power systems, power electronics, machines and drives, renewable energy integration and grid management. You will study circuit theory, electromagnetism, control systems and digital electronics alongside the power-specific content that makes the degree distinctive, developing both the theoretical understanding and the practical skills that industry demands. A sandwich year provides a substantial period of professional experience in an engineering organisation, and work placements and a year abroad are also built into the programme, ensuring that you graduate with meaningful industry exposure alongside your academic qualification.

Graduates work across the energy sector and the broader electrical engineering industry. Power utilities, energy companies, consultancies, grid operators, renewable energy developers, infrastructure contractors and government bodies all recruit power engineers. Roles in power system design and analysis, protection and control, project management and technical consultancy are among the most common destinations.

Chartered engineer status through the Institution of Engineering and Technology is a standard professional aspiration, and the four-year BEng provides the academic foundation for that pathway. Some graduates go on to postgraduate study or research in power systems, energy storage, smart grids or renewable energy engineering.
