About this course

Electro-mechanical engineering combines two of the most fundamental branches of engineering, electrical and mechanical, into a single discipline that is increasingly relevant to modern industrial practice. Machines and systems that do real work in the world almost always involve both kinds of engineering: an electric vehicle depends on mechanical design for its drivetrain and chassis, and on electrical and electronic engineering for its motor, battery management and control systems. Electro-mechanical engineers understand both and can work across the boundary between them.

This four-year full-time programme at Coventry University includes a sandwich year with a work placement and a year abroad, giving you substantial professional and international experience as part of the degree. The programme also includes a foundation year, which provides the mathematical and scientific grounding needed before you progress into the main degree content, making it accessible to students whose prior qualifications need development. Throughout the course you will study mechanical principles including statics, dynamics, thermodynamics and materials, alongside electrical circuits, electronics, control systems, power engineering and mechatronics.

You will also develop practical skills in design, simulation, laboratory work and engineering problem-solving, and you will learn to apply your knowledge to real engineering challenges.

Graduates work in a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, energy, robotics and automation. Roles in design engineering, systems engineering, maintenance, project management and product development are all realistic destinations. The combination of mechanical and electrical expertise is increasingly valued as industries automate and electrify their processes.

Further study at postgraduate level is a common option for those who wish to specialise or move into research and advanced engineering roles.
