About this course

Electronic and electrical engineering with a focus on energy systems addresses one of the most consequential challenges of our time: transforming how societies generate, distribute, store, and use electrical energy. The global energy transition away from fossil fuels towards renewable sources, the electrification of transport and heat, the development of smarter and more resilient electricity grids, and the integration of distributed generation from solar, wind, and storage systems are all driving unprecedented demand for engineers who understand both the fundamental physics of electrical engineering and its application in energy systems. This specialism equips graduates to contribute to that transformation.

At Brunel University London, this three-year full-time degree with a foundation year and the option of a year abroad develops strong analytical and innovative skills across electronics, electrical power, control systems, and communications engineering. The energy systems orientation gives the degree a particular focus on the design and analysis of power electronics, electric machines, grid integration, and the engineering of sustainable energy systems. You will work on hands-on projects that reflect current engineering challenges, and the accredited degree provides the academic foundation for professional registration as a Chartered Engineer.

The year abroad offers the opportunity to study engineering in another national and academic environment.

Graduates are in strong and growing demand as the energy transition accelerates. Career pathways include roles in renewable energy, power systems engineering, grid development, electric vehicle technology, smart grid design, battery systems, and energy management, as well as the broader fields of control systems, communications, and electronics engineering. Major employers include energy companies, grid operators, engineering consultancies, automotive manufacturers, and defence and aerospace organisations.

Many graduates pursue Chartered Engineer status through the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Postgraduate research in power electronics, energy systems, or electrical engineering provides routes into specialist research and senior technical roles.
