About this course

Electronic and electrical engineering is the discipline that designs and develops the systems, circuits and devices through which electrical energy is controlled and converted into useful signals, power and functionality. It underpins virtually every aspect of modern technology, from the power systems that deliver electricity to homes and businesses, through the communications networks that connect the world, to the microelectronics inside every smartphone, medical device and autonomous vehicle. Electronic engineers work with signals, circuits, sensors, processors and software, while electrical engineers focus on generation, transmission, distribution and the electromechanical systems of motors, drives and industrial plant.

Loughborough University's programme with a foundation year is primarily designed for students who have not studied the prerequisite subjects required for first-year entry to the standard degree, including mature students returning to education, care leavers and those whose academic journey has been disrupted by challenging circumstances or prior sport commitments. The foundation year provides the mathematical and scientific foundations needed to progress confidently into the full four-year full-time degree. The typical entry tariff is around 136 UCAS points for this route.

You will develop a solid grounding in circuit theory, electronics, electromagnetics, control systems, digital systems and power engineering as the programme develops, progressing from foundational principles to more advanced topics in areas such as signal processing, embedded systems, communications and power electronics. Practical laboratory work, design projects and the use of simulation and design software run throughout, developing your ability to apply theoretical knowledge to real engineering problems.

Graduates of electronic and electrical engineering programmes from Loughborough work in electronics design, power systems, communications engineering, embedded systems, automotive and aerospace electronics, defence technology, renewable energy and a wide range of industrial and commercial engineering roles. Many graduates work towards Chartered Engineer status with the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Loughborough's strong industry connections and well-established graduate employment record support graduates in securing good professional positions.

Postgraduate study in electronic engineering, power systems, communications or related fields is available for those wishing to develop specialist technical expertise.
