About this course

Electronic and electrical engineering is the discipline that designs, develops, and maintains the systems and devices that generate, transmit, and use electrical energy and information. From power grids and electric vehicles to mobile networks, laptops, and renewable energy systems, the work of electrical and electronic engineers shapes the technologies that most define contemporary life. The discipline requires both theoretical depth in mathematics and physics and the practical ability to design, build, and test electronic and electrical systems.

At Swansea University, this four-year, full-time programme includes an integrated foundation year, making it accessible to students who need to build their mathematical and scientific foundations before the main engineering degree. The foundation year develops the quantitative and scientific knowledge needed to succeed in engineering at degree level, and it is designed as a genuine pathway into a rigorous engineering education. Over the main degree you will study circuit theory, electronic devices, signal processing, control systems, power engineering, and digital systems, developing the theoretical foundations and practical laboratory skills that professional electrical and electronic engineering requires.

Graduates from electronic and electrical engineering programmes work in power generation and distribution, telecommunications, consumer electronics, automotive and aerospace engineering, renewable energy, industrial automation, and semiconductor design. The profession is regulated, and graduates who pursue chartered status with the Institution of Engineering and Technology can achieve recognition that opens senior and leadership roles. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in specialised areas of electrical or electronic engineering, or in related fields such as power systems or embedded systems design.
