About this course

Electronic engineering is a foundational discipline that shapes the technology we rely on every day, from the microprocessors in computers and smartphones to the communication systems that connect the world, the power electronics that enable renewable energy, and the sensors and control systems embedded in vehicles, aircraft, and medical devices. Electronic engineers design, analyse, and build the circuits, systems, and devices that underpin modern infrastructure and consumer technology. It is a discipline that demands both mathematical rigour and practical creativity, and one with consistently strong employment prospects.

The University of Surrey's three-year full-time Electronic Engineering degree has a typical entry tariff of 120 points. Surrey has particular strengths in the satellite and telecommunications industries, and the course notes that students can gain skills and experience through the university's Professional Training placement programme, which has included placements with organisations such as BAE Systems, Nokia, Samsung, and Surrey Satellite Technology. You will study the principles of circuit design, analogue and digital electronics, signal processing, electromagnetics, communications systems, control theory, and embedded systems, developing both theoretical depth and practical competence through laboratory work and project-based learning.

Electronic engineering graduates work in the aerospace, defence, telecommunications, semiconductor, consumer electronics, automotive, energy, and medical device industries, among others. Roles include circuit design engineer, systems engineer, RF engineer, embedded systems developer, signal processing engineer, and project engineer within technology companies, research institutions, and defence contractors. Surrey's location and industry connections also open doors to the satellite and space technology sector.

Many graduates continue to postgraduate study or the master's year, developing advanced specialisation in areas such as communications, power electronics, or microelectronics.

Genuinely worthwhile
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” local cost of l…

Highly recommend
The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable …
