About this course

Electronic engineering with artificial intelligence is a programme that combines the physical science of electronic systems with one of the most transformative technological developments of our era. Electronic engineering provides the hardware foundations of modern technology: the circuits, sensors, communication systems, and embedded platforms on which digital life runs. Artificial intelligence provides the intelligence that makes those platforms increasingly capable of perceiving, reasoning, and acting autonomously.

Engineers who understand both the physical and computational dimensions of intelligent systems are at the frontier of the most consequential technology of our time.

At the University of Southampton you will develop expertise in both fields over four years, studying the core principles of electronic engineering alongside specialist AI topics including machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, and intelligent control systems. You will explore the growing range of applications where electronics and AI converge: autonomous vehicles, medical diagnostics, smart infrastructure, industrial robots, and the next generation of human-computer interfaces. Graduates of electronic engineering with artificial intelligence work in technology companies developing intelligent products and platforms, in the automotive and aerospace industries deploying autonomous systems, in healthcare technology, in robotics and automation, in telecommunications, and in a growing range of roles across defence, finance, and public sector organisations that are integrating AI into their systems and operations. Roles include machine learning engineer, embedded AI developer, systems engineer, computer vision specialist, and hardware-software integration engineer. Many graduates go on to postgraduate research, and doctorates in this field are in strong demand from both academia and industry.
