About this course

Electronic engineering is the discipline concerned with the design, analysis, and application of devices and systems that use electricity to process information and perform useful functions. From the microchips in smartphones and the communication networks that connect billions of people, to medical devices, renewable energy systems, and the sensors embedded in everything from cars to aircraft, electronic engineering underpins the technological infrastructure of modern life. This six-year integrated master's programme at the University of Southampton includes a foundation year and an industrial studies component, giving you both the academic depth of master's level engineering and substantial professional experience.

You will explore the physical components, software, and systems that bring electronic devices to life, designing, building, and testing your own electronic systems across the programme. You will study at the forefront of areas such as quantum devices, nanotechnology, signal processing, communications, and embedded systems, developing the skills to apply these advances to pressing societal challenges including sustainable energy and data security. Southampton's strong links with industry and its research culture mean you will encounter real problems and work in a context that values both theoretical rigour and practical application.

The industrial studies component gives you direct experience of professional engineering practice, complementing your academic work and strengthening your readiness for employment.

Electronic engineering graduates at master's level are in strong demand. Careers include roles in semiconductor design, telecommunications, defence and aerospace, automotive and transport electronics, consumer electronics, medical devices, renewable energy systems, and research and development. The analytical and systems thinking skills the degree develops are also applicable to technology policy, patent law, and management of engineering organisations.

Many graduates go on to doctoral research or specialised technical roles at the frontier of the field.
