About this course

Electronics and computer engineering sits at the intersection of hardware and software, concerned with designing, building and programming the electronic systems and embedded computing platforms that underpin modern technology. Electronics provides knowledge of circuits, signals, microprocessors, sensor systems and communications hardware. Computer engineering extends that foundation into the software and architectural dimensions of computing systems, covering programming, operating systems, digital design and the integration of hardware and software in real systems.

Together they form the engineering discipline that makes smartphones, IoT devices, autonomous systems, medical equipment and industrial automation possible.

At the University of Leeds you will study electronics and computer engineering on an industrial programme over four years of full-time study, with a sandwich year of professional work placement built in. This industrial variant provides significant hands-on experience in a real engineering environment, connecting your academic learning to professional practice and giving you direct exposure to how electronic and computer systems are designed and deployed in industry. Leeds is a leading university for electronic and electrical engineering, and the programme benefits from that research and teaching environment.

You will develop competency in electronic design, programming, embedded systems, signal processing, communication systems and the tools used in professional engineering practice. Work placement is integrated throughout the programme as well as the extended sandwich year.

Graduates work across the electronics, semiconductor, telecommunications, defence, aerospace, automotive, healthcare technology, consumer electronics and energy sectors, in roles spanning hardware design, embedded software development, systems integration, test and verification, project management and technical consulting. The industry year significantly strengthens your graduate employability, and many students secure graduate roles with their placement employer. Postgraduate study in electronics, computer engineering, communications or related fields provides routes to specialist or research careers, and professional registration as a chartered engineer is achievable through the IET.
