About this course

Engineering management sits at the meeting point of technical expertise and organisational leadership, preparing graduates to direct and coordinate engineering projects, teams, and operations within complex technical environments. Engineers who move into management roles need not only the technical knowledge to understand what is being built or produced, but also the skills to plan projects, manage budgets and resources, lead multidisciplinary teams, and make decisions under conditions of uncertainty. Engineering management as a degree integrates these demands from the outset, producing graduates who can bridge the gap between technical and managerial functions.

At Abertay University, you will study Engineering Management over four years, full time, with a year abroad included in the programme. The year abroad gives you international exposure that is particularly relevant in a field where engineering operations frequently span national boundaries and where global supply chains, multinational teams, and international standards are the norm. You will develop technical foundations in engineering principles, including design, systems, manufacturing, and technology, alongside core management skills in project management, operations, finance, strategy, and leadership.

The combination develops your ability to think analytically about both technical and organisational problems, and to communicate across the different professional languages that engineers and managers respectively use.

Graduates of engineering management programmes are valued across manufacturing, aerospace, defence, energy, construction, consultancy, and technology sectors in roles that require both engineering credibility and leadership capability. Project management, operations management, technical consultancy, and supply chain management are common career paths. The degree also provides a strong foundation for further professional development, including chartership in relevant engineering institutions, postgraduate study in engineering management or business administration, and leadership development programmes within large engineering organisations.

The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” good t…
