About this course

Engineering physics applies the rigour and conceptual depth of physics to the practical challenges of engineering and technology. Where pure physics asks what the universe is made of and how it behaves, engineering physics asks how physical principles can be used to design systems, solve problems, and build things that work reliably in the real world. It sits at the interface of science and engineering, requiring both the mathematical and theoretical training of a physics degree and the practical, design-oriented thinking of an engineer.

At Aberystwyth University this four-year, full-time programme includes a year in industry, placing you in a professional engineering or technology environment for a sustained period before you complete your degree. The curriculum combines the knowledge, training, and skills of a physics discipline with the production of engineering solutions in real-world situations. You will study classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and advanced mathematical methods alongside modules in materials, electronics, instrumentation, and engineering design.

The year in industry provides direct experience of how these principles are applied in professional contexts and develops the practical and professional skills that complement your academic formation.

Graduates of engineering physics work across a very wide range of industries. The depth of their scientific understanding makes them well suited to roles in research and development, instrumentation design, materials science, energy technology, telecommunications, medical physics, and the defence and aerospace sectors. Many progress to chartered engineer or chartered physicist status after gaining professional experience.

The combination of theoretical depth and practical orientation is also valued in consulting, technical management, and roles that require translating complex scientific principles into working systems. Further study at Masters or doctoral level is a common path for those who want to specialise in a particular area of physics, engineering science, or technology development.
