Engineering Systems

Engineering systems is a discipline that focuses on how complex, interconnected components work together as a whole, rather than examining individual engineering elements in isolation. It draws on electrical engineering, mechanical principles, control theory and computing to understand how systems are designed, operated, maintained and improved. The approach is especially relevant in an era when many of the most significant engineering challenges, from smart grid management to automated manufacturing and renewable energy integration, involve systems of systems that no single engineering discipline can fully address alone.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands this programme is offered part-time, making it accessible to those who are working in engineering or technical roles and wish to develop their qualifications alongside their careers. UHI's distributed campus model draws on digital and blended learning, allowing students across the Highlands and Islands and beyond to access degree-level engineering education flexibly. The part-time structure means you take fewer modules per week than a full-time student, spreading the workload over a longer period and allowing you to integrate your studies with professional experience.

You will develop an understanding of electrical systems, control engineering, instrumentation, mechanical principles and the management of engineering projects, alongside the analytical and problem-solving skills that underpin professional engineering practice. The programme is suited to those already working in engineering environments who want to formalise and deepen their knowledge, and the practical grounding of many students adds real depth to the learning experience.

Graduates of engineering systems programmes work across the energy, manufacturing, utilities, defence and public infrastructure sectors. Roles in systems engineering, technical management, facilities engineering, maintenance management and instrumentation and control are all accessible career paths. Many graduates use the qualification to progress into more senior technical or management roles within their existing organisations.
