About this course

Engineering is one of the most versatile and consequential of disciplines, concerned with designing, building, and maintaining the systems, structures, and devices that societies depend on. It encompasses mechanical, electrical, civil, and electronic engineering among many other specialisms, and it applies the principles of mathematics and physics to the challenge of solving practical problems in the real world. A foundation year in engineering is an important provision for those who have the aptitude and motivation for the subject but who need to update or fill gaps in the mathematical and physical sciences background that degree-level engineering requires.

At the University of York, this four-year full-time programme opens with a foundation year specifically designed for those returning to education, or who did not study mathematics at A level, to update the mathematical and physics knowledge needed to progress onto one of York's engineering degrees. The foundation year is a genuine preparation, not a detour, giving you the grounding to succeed in engineering study at degree level. York's engineering school has strong research and industry connections, and the degree that follows the foundation year develops the analytical and practical capabilities that engineering careers demand.

You will study the fundamental principles of engineering across mathematics, physics, and technical design, progressing to specialist engineering modules as the degree advances. The engineering education at York is designed to develop both the analytical depth and the professional judgement that the industry values.

Graduates go on to work across the full range of engineering sectors, including energy, transport, manufacturing, communications, defence, and infrastructure. Many pursue professional engineering qualifications and chartered engineer status.
