English and Cultural Studies

English and cultural studies is an interdisciplinary combination that brings together the close reading and critical analysis of literary texts with the broader tools of cultural theory and media analysis. While English literature focuses attention on novels, poetry, and plays as objects of aesthetic and interpretive enquiry, cultural studies extends the analytical gaze to popular culture, film, television, digital media, fashion, music, and the everyday practices and products through which meaning is made and identities are formed. Together they provide a rich and flexible set of approaches to understanding how culture works and what it means.

At the University of Warwick, which has significant strengths in both literary study and cultural theory and is home to a distinctive tradition of engagement with cultural studies as a field, this part-time programme allows students to engage with these disciplines around other commitments. You will study texts across a range of periods and genres in the English literature tradition, developing close reading and analytical writing skills, while also engaging with cultural theory, including questions of ideology, representation, gender, race, and power that cultural studies has brought to the study of contemporary life.
