English and Linguistics
English and linguistics, studied together, cover both what language does and how it works. English literature asks how writers use language to create meaning, emotion, and argument, while linguistics investigates the structure of language itself as a system, examining phonology, grammar, semantics, and the social and historical forces that shape how English has developed and continues to change. Each discipline enriches the other: the close reading skills of literary study deepen the ability to analyse language empirically, and linguistic awareness of how language works sharpens the interpretation of literary texts.
At Queen's University Belfast, this full-time, three-year programme engages with literatures in English across the widest possible range, from Anglo-Saxon origins through to contemporary Irish, British, and global writing. You will study texts in their historical, cultural, and ideological contexts, developing the capacity for close reading and sustained critical argument that literary education demands. The linguistics strand explores the structure and function of language, the ways English is used in everyday and media contexts, and the historical processes that have shaped English over the past fifteen hundred years.
The programme develops strong written communication skills alongside the analytical frameworks of both disciplines. The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points.
Graduates of English and linguistics are well prepared for careers in which language and communication are central. Education, publishing, journalism, media, law, the civil service, heritage and libraries, and arts administration are all natural destinations. The linguistics training adds particular value in roles involving language analysis, speech and language support, communications research, or work with multilingual communities.
Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in English literature, linguistics, applied linguistics, or speech and language science, and some pursue teacher training in English at secondary level.
