About this course

English and philosophy is a combination that has deep intellectual coherence: literature and philosophy have been in productive conversation for as long as both have existed. The greatest literary works raise philosophical questions about knowledge, identity, ethics, and the nature of human experience, and the most compelling philosophy often reads as a kind of literature, attending carefully to language and form in pursuit of ideas that resist easier expression. Studying both disciplines together sharpens your capacity for close reading, rigorous argument, and clear communication in ways that make each more powerful.

At Keele this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside your academic study. You will explore literary texts and philosophical works, developing critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and communication skills that are among the most transferable in any humanities curriculum. The programme covers major historical areas of English literature alongside the central questions of philosophy, from epistemology and ethics to metaphysics and the philosophy of language, with a particular attention to how the two disciplines illuminate each other at their points of intersection.

The placement opportunities allow you to apply your skills in professional environments, building an understanding of how the analytical and communicative competencies you are developing translate into practical value.

Graduates find careers in publishing, media, education, the civil service, law, journalism, marketing, consultancy, and the arts and cultural sector. The combination of philosophical rigour and literary sensitivity is valued in any field requiring careful thinking and clear communication. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, English literature, creative writing, or law, or pursue professional training in journalism, teaching, or related fields.

Would do it again
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if…

Genuinely worthwhile
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant studen…
