English and Theological Studies

English and theological studies is a combination that invites sustained reflection on some of the most enduring questions in Western intellectual and cultural life. Literature in English has been shaped, from its earliest forms to the present, by religious thought, by the stories, metaphors, and moral frameworks that theology provides, and by the contested relationships between faith, doubt, and secular modernity. Theological studies, in turn, draws on textual interpretation, narrative analysis, and the close reading of authoritative texts in ways that are deeply connected to the methods of literary criticism.

At St Andrews, this four-year programme develops your skills in literary analysis across a wide range of genres and historical periods, teaching you to read closely, to situate texts in their historical and cultural contexts, and to engage with the ideas and human values that literature explores. The theological studies strand introduces you to systematic and historical theology, biblical studies, philosophy of religion, and the history of religious thought, giving you the conceptual tools to engage with the religious dimensions of the cultural inheritance you are examining. A year abroad is built into the programme, broadening your academic and personal experience.
