English Language and Linguistics

English language and linguistics is the scientific study of language as a human phenomenon: how it is structured, how it is acquired, how it varies across communities and cultures, how it changes over time, and how it is used to construct meaning, identity, and social relationships. Where literature examines what language says, linguistics examines how it works, applying methods from cognitive science, sociology, philosophy, and computing to questions that are both theoretically rich and practically significant.

At the University of the West of England in Bristol, this three-year full-time programme allows you to explore the complexity of language and its relationship to wider society, culture, and the mind. You will engage with contemporary global issues through a linguistic lens, from artificial intelligence and natural language processing to the politics of language and the environment. The teaching team brings a wide range of research specialisms, ensuring that you encounter the breadth of the discipline as it is practised today.

A sandwich year is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to work in a relevant professional setting before your final year, and work placement is also available.

You will study phonology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, language acquisition, and discourse analysis, developing both technical knowledge of linguistic systems and the broader critical perspective on how language functions in the world. Research methods are central to the programme, preparing you to investigate language questions independently.

Graduates go on to work in a wide range of fields: speech and language therapy (with additional postgraduate training), teaching English as a foreign language, lexicography, publishing, journalism, communication, natural language processing, translation, and the civil service. The analytical skills linguistics develops are valued across many sectors. Postgraduate study in linguistics, applied linguistics, or language-related fields is a common next step.
